Xpat Opinion: Gov To Increase Number Of Students Entering Higher Ed In Hungary
Just when you thought the overlords of Hungary are lacking basic common sense and have yet to come up with one single effective reform, analysts’ minds were torpedoed today with the announcement of what the Hungarian press calls drastic tuition fee hikes for higher ed students entering the system in 2013.

The tuition fee increase is due to the decrease in “state-sponsored” slots at universities and colleges.

As much as 80% of entrants will be self-sponsoring students, in contrast to previous years when “state sponsored” students were the majority, according to press speculation.

The goal is to increase the number of those entering higher education, declared Spokesman Andras Giro-Szasz, according to MTI. Speaking on HirTV, he refuted claims that the Government is increasing tution fees per se (?!), but explained a new type of student loan will be available which will be affordable for everyone, in contrast to previous types of tuition systems which were not. Hmm…

Higher education in Hungary dates back to 1367 when Louis the Great founded the first Hungarian university in the city of Pecs.
