Annual Film Festival Cancelled In Hungary
The annual Hungarian Film Festival will not be held this year due to a shortage of films, Népszava reported on Saturday. The Hungarian Film Makers Federation will instead hold a public general meeting on February 2.

Director Béla Tarr, president of the Federation, told Népszava that “this is the first year in which we cannot stage the film festival. I think the time has come for us to take account of the realistic position of our profession so that we can together discuss our issues and shape our plans for the future.

“I believe we are in the final hour, we must not drift on, we must show that we are adults who are able to guide their own future.”

Organisers said last week that there are too few movies to stage the event for the 44th year, due to government cutbacks in funding.
