Hungarian Football Punished For Racism
FIFA has fined the Hungarian Football Association (MLSZ) SFr 40,000 and ordered the national team to play March’s World Cup qualification match against Romania behind closed doors, as punishment for racist acts by Hungarian fans.

Hungarian soccer fans made racist, anti-Semitic remarks and displayed politically provocative and aggressive conduct on August 15 at an friendly with Israel.

FIFA said on Tuesday that the European anti-racism movement, a Vienna-based Jewish group, and the Simon Wiesenthal Centre had reported the incident to FIFA.

FIFA warned that if another such incident occurs, points will be deducted and ultimately the Hungarian team could be excluded from the World Cup.

An MLSZ statement acknowledged the seriousness of the incident but called the punishment excessive. It will examine the possibility of filing an appeal against the decision.
