Invitation: Harmonia Jazz Workshop, Budapest Jazz Club, 25 January
Calling all English speaking jazz lovers to this special workshop which kicks-off at 8pm on Friday, 25th January, presented by the Szabolcs Olah Quintet. Szabolcs was named best soloist in 2000 at the National Youth Jazz Festival, and four years later he won first prize in a national jazz competition. Go along to enjoy jazz and a well stocked bar, including cocktails made to order at non-extortionate prices. For food you’ll have to resort to a diet of sandwiches, crisps and nuts.

Guitarist Szabolcs Olah is an immensely thoughtful player whose music could be described as post-cool. He formed this exciting new group last summer.

Gabor Cseke is an outstanding pianist. He earned high praise from American saxophone giant, Dave Liebman.. He is not only an absolutely amazing soloist but also one of the finest accompanists you can find. You’d also get glowing references of him from the likes of Byron Wallen, Peter King or Louise Marshall. Sax-player Janos Aved has a terrific tone and – despite his relatively late start in music – is already a mature player with fantastic ideas pouring out of his horn.

His gig with guitarist Gabor Csongrad was one of the most original acts three years ago at the Palace of Arts. He in now firmly in the vanguard of the Hungarian jazz scene. Marton Soos on bass is one of the rising stars on his instrument in this country. He is also a member of Janos Aved’s group and a long-time associate of Szablocs. Andras Des is the uncrowned king of the new generation of Hungarian percussionists, an immensely skilful, witty and inventive player.

No wonder the London audience cheered him to the rafters when he appeared as part of the Gerard Presencer-Kalman Olah Anglo-Hungarian Septet at the 2008 London Jazz Festival.

Entry fee: 1400 forints

The BJC is in the 13th district at Hollán Ernő utca 7.
