Lean Startup Methodology: Is experimentation an alternative to planning?

About the discussion:

You are an entrepreneur who develops an idea of a new business. You would like to take an innovative new product or service to the market. Your time, energy and resources are limited. What to do? Is it worth working on a detailed business plan and then implement it? Or is it better to launch a prototype as soon as possible and see how customers react?

Lean startup methodology could provide answers. It treats startup is an experiment. Innovative products require continuous and professional experimentation: key ideas and assumptions behind a business idea must be tested empirically. Surveys reflect the fact that many startups radically change their plans along the way. The goal of experimentation is to learn quickly using short iterations, thereby avoiding waste, getting customer validation and finding a solution that works before running out time and resources.

The popularity of the lean startup methodology is growing. Is it hype or a modern and efficient way for designing and launching businesses? What are the pros and cons? What can we learn from practitioners?
