Invitation: Martin McDonagh: The Lonesome West, Atrium Budapest, 1 April
Fratricidal struggle in two acts: Coleman and Valene, who have just recently lost their father in a curious accident, are living at the edge of a godforsaken Irish village. In the midst of their great grief – in which the massively alcoholic priest, Father Welsh tries to comfort them – their days are spent with annoying, pranking, and constantly bothering each other. What’s more, for them, this is life itself – it doesn’t matter whether it’s meat pie or saint statuettes or picture magazines or chips or alcoholic beverages or estate or dogs or cows or women: they can argue and fight about anything and at any time.

Even to the utmost extent. This is what the play is about: sin and love. And about whether there is a life after death. Or before. We recommend this performance to people with families and to the single, to parents and to siblings, to friends and to neighbours, to lovers and to enemies. But most of all to people.

Martin McDonagh, a contemporary Irish writer, who is also known as a director, wrote The Lonesome West in 1997 after The Cripple of Inishmaan, The Beauty Queen of Leenane, and A Skull in Connemara. The drama earned him the Alfréd Radok Award from Czech theatre critics. The Hungarian premiere was held in 2004 in Pesti Színház Theatre, also directed by Péter Gothár, who has proved with his work on The Cripple of Inishmaan at Radnóti Theatre that he is able to understand and interpret McDonagh’s unique world.
