June traditionally marks the beginning of summer. Longer days, warmer weather, barbeques with friends, swimming in the sea, holidays with your families, and of course more time in the sun.

There are many things we can do to protect ourselves and our skin from one of the most common forms of cancer. Most skin cancers are caused by damage from UV (ultraviolet) rays in sunlight. Many people are unaware of the damage that can be done to the skin even on a cloudy day. Damage may occur with even limited exposure to the sun for short periods of time.

Melanoma if recognized and treated early is almost always curable. If not detected early the cancer may spread to other parts of the body when it becomes harder to treat and therefore more deadly. While it is not the most common of the skin cancers, with an additional 120,000 new cases each year, it causes the most deaths.

Protection Tips

· Seek shade, especially between 10 AM and 4 PM. Do not Burn!

· Wear clothing, hats and UV-blocking sunglasses.

· Use a broad spectrum (UVA/UVB) SPF 15> sunscreen every day.

· Use sunscreen with an SPF of 30 or higher 30 minutes before going outside. Reapply every two hours or right after swimming

· Keep newborns out of the sun! Sunscreen may be used 6m+

· Examine your skin head-to-toe every month.

· Wear a hat and sun protection
