Hungary's Zsolnay Turns To The Middle East
Porcelain manufacturer Zsolnay has laid off 30 staff and raised prices in order to ensure the functioning of the company, CEO László Vajda told regional daily Dunántúli Napló. Retail prices have often been at or below production costs, he added.

Ten employees were retired and some director and middle management posts were eliminated.

Orders linked to events while Pécs was a European Capital of Culture in 2010 helped to stave off losses, but the company closed last year Ft 300 million in the red, he added.

The contacts in the Arab markets of Syrian businessman Bachar Najari, who bought the renowned porcelain maker earlier this year, have helped Zsolnay to seal deals in the Middle East, Vajda added.
