Invitation: Jazz Concert At The Palace Of Arts Budapest, 20 August
Some things never change – holiday celebrations among them. And so, too, the Festive Jam Session which has now become an indispensable part of the programme at the Palace of Arts, will take place as just one of many events in the capital to mark the 20 August holiday. This year, as in every year since 2005, the Palace of Arts puts on a series of free jazz concerts inside and outside the building until sunset, followed – both before and after the holiday fireworks display – by the traditional show of the Police Big Band, guaranteed to have the crowd up on their feet and dancing.

In his capacity as host of the event, band leader, trumpeter and trombonist Béla Szalóky welcomes fans of traditional jazz both old and new from 5 pm, acting as compère for the Storyville Jazz Band, a Szeged-based Dixieland and trad-jazz outfit, on the Open-Air Main Stage, as well as the Gábor Cseke Trio at the Banner Square and the József Balázs Quintet inside in the Glass Hall.

Each band will perform for almost three hours with only short breaks. While the Storyville Jazz Band performs its repertoire from the 1920s and 1930s to evoke the genuine atmosphere of New Orleans, the indoor concerts once again take the form of jam sessions where outstanding soloists are invited to play together in an informal setting, including on this occasion the likes of guitarist István Gyárfás and saxophonist Sándor Zsemlye.
