Hungary’s Baja Election Fraud Still Under Debate
The leak of a video implicating Fidesz in further electoral misconduct in Baja led to accusations and counter accusations over the weekend. A film recorded on October 12 and posted on website hvg.hu on Friday seemingly shows a Fidesz fixer handing over cash to Roma people in exchange for votes in the recent Baja repeated by-election, held after a court had found Fidesz guilty of electoral fraud.

Fidesz mayor Róbert Zsigó called the recording evidence that a pre-arranged and premeditated attempt has been made to discredit his party.

Híradó named the mediator as Róbert Gilián who lives in Bajaszentistván, a district of Baja. He allegedly promised the men Ft 50,000 and firewood if they and their family would vote for Fidesz.

HírTV said Gilián was only prepared to reveal how the recording was made for a minimum of Ft 300,000 cash.

A police inquiry then declared the recording to be adulterated or manipulated.

Blikk reported that K.G, a Roma councillor in Solt, had told the police that the Socialists had commissioned the video.

K.G. added that six people had shot the recording, with three acting out the bribery scene and he and two others filming it.

Socialist Party spokesman Zsolt Török said “that is complete nonsense.” Török warned that a criminal report will be filed on any false accusation claiming the Socialist Party had anything to do with the recording.
