Xpat Opinion: Hungary's PM: US Is A Defining Power, A Key Ally
Long a subject of the rumor mill, it became official last week: the new U.S. ambassador to Hungary will be Ms. Colleen Bradley Bell. Budapest looks forward to receiving the President Obama’s top envoy, and I hope I will get the chance to meet her in person at some point after she gets settled in. Though some like to make a lot out of issues that have come up in Hungary-US relations over the last few years, the fact is that the relationship – whether it’s about working together to improve nuclear security, condemning intolerance, or affirming a commitment to go “in together, out together” in the NATO mission in Afghanistan – remains rock-solid.

In the excitement of the announcement, here’s something you may have missed. Addressing the Hungarian Diaspora Council last week, Prime Minister Orbán spoke of the importance of that relationship and of the United States as the defining power of Western civilization:

“It is quite obvious that the United States – a key ally to Hungary because NATO is the number one framework for Hungary’s network of alliances and the USA is the defining power in NATO – has not resigned itself in any way to the notion that its leading position in the world could be taken away. It has stepped up to the global contest currently underway and, according to our hopes, as the defining power of Western civilization, will again prove successful in the future.”
