Jewish Religious Communities Federation To Boycott Holocaust Memorial Events In Hungary
The Jewish religious communities federation Mazsihisz decided in a 76-2 vote yesterday not to take part in official government commemorations of the Holocaust if the government goes ahead with plans for its monument to the German occupation of Hungary in 1944.

Mazsihisz objects that the government’s plans play down Hungarian collaboration in the Holocaust, and that it has not been consulted on major projects.

Mazsihisz also insists that development of the House of Fates memorial at the Józsefváros train station be suspended, and that Sándor Szakály be fired from his post as head of the government historical institute Veritas.

The government’s proposed projects “do not take into account the arguments or the sensitivity of those who had suffered from the horrors of the Holocaust”, the organisation said in a statement.

The group also decided that it will reject government funds related to the Holocaust Memorial Year, a step taken by some synagogues and other Jewish organisations last week.
