German Archaeology Institute Welcomes Recovery Of Seuso Silver In Hungary
Hungary’s recent re-acquisition of seven pieces of the late Roman Seuso silver collection is “joyful news”, the head of the German Archeology Institute’s Frankfurt-based Roman- Germanic research institute told MTI on Thursday.

Eszter Bánffy noted that the Seuso treasure was one of the most important such collections from late antiquity, and insisted that experts were convinced that the silver tableware was from the Lake Balaton area.

Referring to Hungary’s earlier efforts to recover the collection from the United Kingdom, Bánffy said it had been “terrible” to see a New York court dismissing Hungary’s arguments when they supported evidence that “the treasures were smuggled out of Hungary”.

The reacquisition of seven pieces of silverware from the late Roman Empire known as the Seuso or Sevso treasure was announced by Prime Minister Viktor Orbán on Wednesday.
