Police Shoot Down Blikk Tabloid Story In Budapest
The tabloid Blikk falsely claimed in its Tuesday edition that a safe was robbed during a burglary at the First District office of Tamás Welsz on Logodi utca, the Budapest Police said in a statement Tuesday afternoon.

The police confirmed that they are investigating an incident of suspected vandalism at the office, as someone apparently damaged the door lock, but said no forced entry or theft occurred.

Welsz, who was at the centre of a recent scandal in which he allegedly helped entrepreneurs and politicians secret away dubiously obtained fortunes, died of at present unknown causes in hospital after being taken into police custody in March.

Police on Tuesday denied a Népszava report that Welsz did not die, but rather was involved in a witness protection program.

“We do not admit deceased people into witness protection programs,” the police said. “It is a well-known fact that the man died in a Budapest healthcare facility after receiving meticulous medical care.”
