Xpat Opinion: Happy Birthday, Rubik’s Cube
The Empire State Building in New York will wear an unusual light painting soon. On April 24th, is the 40th anniversary of the famous game that has become a symbol of Hungary’s innovative spirit, the Rubik’s Cube. Since the inventor, Ernő Rubik, designed the toy in 1974, hundreds of millions have been sold. People the world over have been confounded and entertained by the endearing cube puzzle.

The New York tri-state area will have several events to celebrate. The Liberty Science Center in New Jersey is hosting programs in conjunction with a special exhibition (check out the website here), the world’s first and largest about the cube and the inventions and art it has inspired. The Empire State Building will be lit up with the colors of the cube and a huge plastic cube will be floating on the Hudson River to promote the events.

President Áder held a gala dinner just recently to honor the inventor, Mr. Rubik, who will be present at the Liberty Science Center. It’s great to see a Hungarian invention celebrated for a few festive days in New York. Happy birthday, Cube. You make us proud.
