Hungarian Cardinal Erdő Praises “Special” Relationship Between Christians And Jews
The relationship between the Jewish faith and Christianity is “special” and there are “valuable theological connections which are embodied from the beginning in Jesus,” Hungarian Cardinal Péter Erdő told a conference on Monday.

The conference was organised by the Hungarian Catholic Bishop’s Conference and Pázmány Péter Catholic University concerning the Nostra Aetate adopted by the Second Vatican Council (1962-1965) on relations between the Catholic Church and other religions.

Erdő said that theological conclusions can be drawn which teach the value of and respect for the “older brother” and the theological value found in the Jewish religion.

Ilan Mor, Israel’s ambassador to Hungary, said at the event that the concurrent visit by Pope Francis in Israel is of symbolic value and the adoption of the Nostra Aetate by the Vatican Council had recorded a “unique moment”. The document, among other conclusions, lifted the collective charges against the Jewish people in assisting Jesus’ death and underlined the fact that the roots of the church were found in Judaism. It also categorically rejected anti- Semitism, Mor said.

He noted that the Nostra Aetate had opened up a new era, inviting everyone to work towards the creation of a better world in which education and the fight against anti- Semitism play important roles.
