Hungarian Minister Gives Details Of Nuclear Waste Shipment
Hungary returned damaged fuel rods from the Paks nuclear plant to Russia under control by international nuclear authorities, development minister Miklós Seszták said on parliament’s website. Seszták responded to a question by a green opposition LMP deputy, which suggested safety risks around the recent shipment.

The minister said that Hungary had obtained the relevant permits, and the operation had been monitored by the International Atomic Energy Agency, as well as by Euratom, the European Atomic Energy Community.

The damaged fuel rods left Hungary at Záhony border station and were transported across Ukraine, Seszták confirmed.

The rods were damaged in April 2003, when they overheated in a cleaning tank next to one of the plant’s reactors.
