Online Cash Registers Helped Whiten Hungary’s Economy
The introduction of online cash registers connected to the tax office has helped whiten the economy, with a sudden increase in VAT reported by traders, the economy ministry has said. From Monday on, all businesses must use online cash registers.

Figures by the tax office show that over 170,000 online cash registers have been installed and shops could choose from 146 licensed models.

Those that fail to comply with the regulations and continue using conventional tax registers after Sept. 1 can expect a fine of up to 1 million forints and the tax office may also order the shop to be closed for 12 working days.

The government decided on October 5, 2012 to make online cash registers connected to the tax office mandatory.

After social and professional consultations, the deadlines for introduction were published on February 15, 2013. Economy Minister Mihály Varga said earlier that the tills had raised VAT paid by retail businesses by 106 billion forints in the first half of the year.
