Hungary May Ban Selected American Citizens
The Foreign Ministry is allegedly working on a plan to ban certain Americans from Hungary, just as the US has banned six Hungarian government officials, including NAV president Ildikó Vida, the weekly Figyelõ reported.

The cabinet reportedly made a decision to that effect two weeks ago, and officials who will play a role in preparing the decision have been informed.

The reception of the idea was “mixed”, as several officials considered it an unnecessary flexing of muscles.

According to the weekly, Prime Minister Viktor Orbán is acting with confidence in this matter, as German Chancellor Angela Merkel has informally indicated that she disapproves of the US “pushing ahead in the EU”.

Similarly to the American procedure, US citizens could be put on a banned list without explanation.

Népszabadság was told that although the idea has been raised, it is not certain that a ban will be approved.

The Foreign Affairs and Trade Ministry said only “we shall inform the public in due course”.

Figyelõ adds that the government will adopt a tough stance toward the EU in the near future.
