Electricity, Gas In Hungary Second Cheapest In Europe
Hungarian families now pay the second lowest prices for gas and electricity in the European Union, János Fónagy, state secretary at the development ministry, said. Fónagy said that the government’s utility cuts programme, launched in January last year, has so far left 334 billion forints (EUR 1.1bn) with families.

According to the latest figures, households have saved 160 billion forints on electricity, 139 billion on gas, and 35 billion on district heating, he said.

The retail price of gas has been reduced by a combined 25%, the price of electricity by 24.5% and district heating by 22.5% compared to the prices before the utility cut programme, the official said.

He added that the utility cut scheme, designed to ease the burden on families, has helped nearly 4 million households.

Fónagy noted that the government was planning to extend the scheme to companies, and increase their competitiveness through lower energy prices.
