Mayor Tarlós Proposes Trial Run For Controversial Road Toll
Budapest mayor István Tarlós and the Fidesz mayors of most districts proposed a one-year trial period for tolls on the M0 ring road at a meeting on Monday. During that period traffic should be measured on roads, and the impact of the toll should be examined, Tarlós told reporters.

Opposition party mayors will not accept the motorway toll, with Dialogue politician and 14th District mayor Gergely Karácsony dismissing the idea as simply a means of collecting money that is not integrated into any transport organisation concept.

He said Tarlós and the Fidesz mayors did not have the courage to send clear signals to the cabinet, although the measure is extremely disadvantageous for the city.

Government spokeswoman Éva Kurucz said the cabinet has been examining the question of introducing county stickers for years and feasibility studies will be made available in the near future.

She added that the cabinet will discuss the issue on Wednesday.
