Record Number Of Heart Transplants At Városmajor Clinic In Budapest
A record number of 50 heart transplants have been carried out at the Budapest Semmelweis University’s Vascular Surgery Department this year, the clinic said. The main trigger behind the number has been that doctors “seized every opportunity” to help patients in need and conducted when possible two operations on the same day, it said.

The first successful heart transplant was carried out in Hungary by Professor Zoltán Szabó in 1992.

Since then altogether 339 such operations have been carried out in the country, 310 of them at the Városmajor clinic.

There are only ten heart centres around the world where 50 heart transplants are carried out per year.
