EU Might Veto Hungary's Paks Expansion
The EU might block the expansion project of the nuclear power plant Paks on technical and competition grounds, the Financial Times wrote on Monday.

The European Commission has approved the project in principle, but other EU organisations such as nuclear regulator Euratom have not yet approved the fuel rod supply and the Commission’s competition officials have not completed their examination.

Euratom oversees contracts not longer than ten years, while longer-term agreements are within the purview of the Commission.

The Commission might find illegal state financing elements in the financing of the expansion project, the Financial Times points out. In addition, awarding the contract directly to Rosatom without any tender may also be questioned.

However, Commission spokeswoman Ana-Kaisa Itkonen said in response that examinations are in their preliminary phase and it is too early to draw any conclusions.
