Govt Promises Free Meals For Poorer Kids In Hungary
Hungary’s crèches and kindergartens will offer poorer children three meals a day free of charge from September on, János Lázár, the cabinet chief, said. Some 320,000 children will be eligible for the free meals while welloff parents will still be charged for their children’s meals. On another subject, Lázár said that the government’s job protection scheme will be extended to farm workers in the 25-55 age group.

Accordingly, employers will pay 14.5% less in social security contributions after each worker. Also, the government will provide 2 billion forints (EUR 6.7m) in financial assistance to 84 local governments impacted by the recent bankruptcy of brokerage firm Buda-Cash, Lázár announced.

The funds would be paid out to the recipients in the next few days. Meanwhile, the government has also set aside another 10 billion forints for municipal developments, Lázár said, adding that the monies would be dedicated to the 115 localities that did not participate in a government programme undertaking to repay debt amassed by local governments.

Further, the government will pay fines the European Commission has imposed on 140 municipalities for irregularities in EU-financed local projects.

The government also supported a recent proposal to increase compensation by Hungary’s Beva investor protection fund from 20,000 to 100,000 euros, Lázár said.
