Upcoming Expat Theatre: 'Pretext', Müszi Budapest, 20 & 21 May
Pretext is an original comedy from Budapest English Theatre. A light-hearted look at a serious subject: the war of the sexes as they face their mortality. Written and directed by the company’s Artistic Director, Virginia Proud, she also takes to the stage with Beth Spisljak, Esther Holbrook and Madeleine Damasdi. Asked about juggling so many roles, she said “I won’t deny it, it was challenging! But developing the show was a very collaborative process, and it's such a fun piece that I couldn't resist joining in on stage.”

Pretext’s middle aged heroines, Cathy, Lucy and Anne are facing the unfortunate truth that men their own age are abandoning their dating pool for the younger model. But rather than drown their sorrows in martinis, they fight back with a plan to seduce hot, young men – while they still can. It’s the trick men have been using for centuries, the casting couch. The consequences are not exactly what they anticipated, but it works a treat. That is, until they are caught in their own web of deceit.

The show premiered in October 2014 to an enthusiastic response. Budapest blogger and columnist, Mary Murphy said, “A great night. Thoroughly enjoyed it. Would go to see it again - there were so many laughs that I think I may have missed some.”

Scott Alexander Young, for Budapest In Your Pocket, agreed, “There are plenty of laughs to be had, from knowing snickers to the more full-bellied kind.”

It is returning for two shows only, as the cast prepares for it's shows at Prague Fringe Festival. Known as "Edinburgh's naughty grandchild', the 14th Prague Fringe will run 22-30 May 2015. The programme is primarily English performances and attracts companies from all over the globe. "We're looking forward to sharing Pretext's crazy ladies with the Fringe audience." Proud says. "We'll see if the theme really is as universal as we think."

Budapest English Theatre was founded in 2012 and presents new writing, contemporary classics, and hosts international English language companies in Budapest.
