Grand Circus May Give Way To Zoo Under Government Plans
Budapest’s Metropolitan Grand Circus may have to say goodbye to its current location – adjacent to Budapest Zoo in the city’s largest park Városliget – under current plans. According to information obtained by cink.hu, the options of rebuilding the Grand Circus’s dilapidated building and erecting a new circus in a different location will both be discussed this month by the government.

Having already acquired the territory of the former Vidámpark amusement park, which has since largely given way to animal enclosures and buildings, Budapest Zoo is also eager to gain possession of the land currently occupied by the circus, according to the report.

If this concept is given the go-ahead, the circus could be relocated to its current rehearsal building, which is also situated in Városliget, at the intersection of Hungária körút and the beginning of the M3 motorway.

Opened in 1971, the Metropolitan Grand Circus is Central Europe’s only permanent circus and has a capacity of 1850 spectators.

It operates around the year and has also hosted classical music concerts, fashion shows, sports events, pop music concerts, as well as folk dance, theatre and operetta performances in previous years.
