Hungary will send 20 police officers to serve on Serbia’s border with Macedonia, the two countries’ police chiefs agreed in Szeged on Monday. Hungary’s Károly Papp said the 20 officers as well as four mobile heat-sensing cameras will be deployed in Serbia next week. In addition, the Hungarian, Serb and Austrian police forces will set up a unit to investigate people-smuggling, Papp said after meeting his Serbian counterpart Milorad Veljovic.

Units from the emergency police and county police forces have been ordered to the border region due to the rise in illegal migration, and their number can be increased if necessary, Papp told reporters.

As an estimated one thousand people enter Serbia from Macedonia and Bulgaria every day, it is important to beef up the Macedonian border, Veljovic said. German police might also help in guarding the borders, he added.
