Changing Hungarian Pensions Could Have “Serious Ramifications”
Giving men the option to retire after 40 years of work could lead to a serious shortage in some professions, Sándor Czomba, state secretary at the economy ministry, said. Czomba told a press conference that in the next few years some 62,000 people would retire from areas where there is already a shortage. This includes 12,000 engineers. For demographic reasons, the number of newcomers will be below that of retirees, therefore “we need to carefully consider” what changes could be implemented.

Concerning the fact that women can retire after 40 years of work, Czomba said that women do “a number of unpaid jobs” such as parenting or housework.

Proponents of a recent initiative have launched a signature drive to support a referendum in which voters would be asked if men, similarly to women, should have the option of early retirement when they have worked 40 years, even if they are below the official retirement age.
