Preparations For August 20 Fireworks In Budapest On Schedule
Preparations for the annual August 20 fireworks over the Danube are on the right track, a senior defence ministry official said. All the rockets are now in place and preparations by the armed forces’ flotilla are progressing as scheduled, Nóra Ivády, head of the ministry directorate organising the event, told a press conference. For the first time in several years, Gellért Hill will once again take centre stage in the fireworks marking St. Stephen’s Day, Hungary’s greatest national holiday.

Fireworks will also be launched from the Szabadság (Liberty) Bridge and from military pontoons on the river.

Celebrations will start in the morning with Hungary’s national flag raised in the presence of President János Áder, to be followed by the commissioning and oath-taking ceremony of officers.

The parliament building will be open to the public between 10am and 6pm and there will be open-air concerts and other events at various parts of the city including the castle district.

A special mass will be held in front of the Saint Stephen Basilica, to be followed by the traditional procession in which King Stephen’s embalmed right hand is carried round. The fireworks are scheduled to start at 9pm.
