Over 180,000 Illegal Entries Registered So Far In Hungary This Year
There have been 181,014 illegal entries registered so far in Hungary this year, Tibor Lakatos, department head of the national police, told a press conference. The number of asylum applications submitted was 166,465, Attila Kiss, the deputy director of the national immigration office, said. In the meantime, construction of a 40-metre section of fencing to close the gap at the rail tracks linking Horgos in Serbia with Röszke in Hungary has begun.

In Szentgotthárd, Hungary’s westernmost town at the Austrian border, the setup of a registration point for 400 people began as well.

Foreign minister Péter Szijjártó said in Prague on Friday that the number of migrants crossing into Hungary could total between 400,000-500,000 by the end of the year if the country fails to consolidate the defence of its southern border.

On Saturday, three days before a Hungarian law to tighten border control comes into effect, authorities recorded 4,079 illegal entrants, the highest number ever in one day, at the southern borders.

Among the migrants were 1,026 children, local police spokesman Szabolcs Szenti said, adding that most of the illegal entries were recorded at the Röszke crossing point.
