Mayor: Budapest Could Introduce Congestion Charge Late In 2016
Budapest could, in theory, introduce a congestion fee around the end of 2016, Mayor István Tarlós said in an interview in daily Népszava. He told the paper he would support a proposal, not from him, because of the “lack of a better one”. Under the proposal, drivers within the city limits would pay a minimal fee, while vehicles in the inner city would pay a congestion charge “in the literal sense of the word”, he added

Tarlós noted that the congestion charge was a product of the city’s previous government which committed to its introduction as a condition for winning European Union support for the construction of the new fourth metro line.

There is no choice here: we have to introduce the congestion charge or pay back all of the support to the EU, he said.
