Poll Shows Fidesz Gains Popularity Over Summer
The ruling Fidesz party has increased its support over the summer, gaining four points to finish on 32% from May to September, a poll by Medián showed. The percentage of respondents who rejected Fidesz fell from 45 to 40% in the same period, the poll published on Medián’s website said. At the same time support for the radical nationalist Jobbik party fell from 16% in May to 13% in September, so the pollster suggested that Fidesz may have gained voters from the Jobbik camp.

The Socialists recorded 11% support in September, rising slightly from May. The percentage of people with no party preferences stayed the same from May, around 34%, the poll said.

Fully 38% said they were satisfied with the government’s work, up from 33% in May, before the government’s migration policies came into effect.

The percentage of respondents who felt the country was going in the right direction also rose from 31% in May to 35% in September.

The popularity list of politicians was still topped by Hungary’s President János Áder in September, followed by Prime Minister Viktor Orbán and Economy Minister Mihaly Varga.

The only opposition politicians in the top half of the rankings were Jobbik leader Gábor Vona and Gábor Karácsony, a politician of the Dialogue for Hungary (PM) party. The poll was taken on September 11-15.
