1956 Memorial Committee Formed In Hungary
A committee formed to organise commemorations of the 60th anniversary of the 1956 Uprising next year held its inaugural meeting at the House of Terror Museum. Human Resources Minister Zoltán Balog told the committee that the government had desecrated the occasion in 2006, and that this must be made up for.

The October 23, 2006 holiday was marred when groups of far-right activists repeatedly clashed with police in downtown Budapest and blocked access to the Elizabeth Bridge late into the night. Fidesz has continually maintained that police were guilty of brutality in dispersing the rioters.

House of Terror director Mária Schmidt, the government commissioner for the memorial year, said the task is to commemorate the 60th anniversary appropriately and take the example of 1956 closer to the heart of ordinary people.
