Ministry Rejecting Lidl Expansions In Hungary
The Economy Ministry has refused all 28 requests from German discount chain Lidl for exemptions from the so-called “plaza stop” law against the construction of large shops or shopping malls. The law passed in 2012 banned the construction of retail units larger than 300m2 until 2013 and larger than 400m2 from 2014, if no special permit was obtained.

From 2014, the national authority for the case is not the ministry but the Hajdú-Bihar County Office.

Overall, 142 applications were approved by the end of 2014 and 90 rejected.

Of those rejected requests, 28 came from Lidl, three from each of Aldi and Tesco and one from Metro.
