Court Fines Man For Holocaust Denial In N Hungary
A local court has fined a man for posting a comment denying the Holocaust in public, a court spokesman said. The man, a resident of Dömös, in northern Hungary, posted a comment on a community site last August in response to an article written by Slomó Köves, chief rabbi of the Unified Hungarian Jewish Congregation (EMIH), on the Holocaust, Ferenc Szabó, of the Tatabánya court, told MTI. In his comment, the man used a term in which he described the Holocaust as “sham.”

In an investigation into the case he admitted to his act and apologised afterwards in a letter saying that it was a result of losing his temper.

The court of Esztergom fined the man 800,000 forints in a final ruling.

Should the perpetrator fail to pay that sum, he will face 400 days imprisonment, said Szabó.

The Hungarian parliament passed legislation in 2010 under which denial of the Holocaust and of crimes by the Nazi regime in public is punishable by up to three years imprisonment.
