With a superb cast and internationally acclaimed directors, Katona József Theatre is one of the major art theatres in Hungary. Katona stages classic Hungarian and international drama, as well as a selection of contemporary plays. Located downtown in vibrant District V, Katona is a vital part of Budapest’s cultural scene.

Illaberek - 19 May

The Katona has always been interested in dealing with the crucial problems of Hungarian society – this time the topic is emigration, a phenomenon that determines the lives of almost all Hungarian families: for one reason or another, economic or political, many people decide to leave Hungary and try their fortunes abroad.

The performance is mostly based on the actors’ improvisations, the scenes follow each other in a loose dramaturgical structure, some scenes are connected to each other, some others are not.

The Seagull By Anton Chekhov  - 20 May

Among all the Chekhov plays, it is The Seagull which contains most elements of real actions of real people. The direction of Tamás Ascher brings this all-time drama classic to the 21. century with an all-star ensemble cast.

An Enemy of the People - By Henrik Ibsen - 23 May

Dr Stockmann discovers, that the water of the baths, which revived the small town is polluted. The public, led by the mayor (who is the elder brother of the doctor) refuses to face the truth. The doctor not only has to face with the power of money and the corruption of the authorities, but the public slowly but surely turning against him.
