Govt Pledges 65.5 Million Forints For Teen Rehab Centres In 2017
The government has pledged 65.5 million forints (EUR 208,000) in grants for teenage substance abuse treatment centres for 2017, a human resources ministry official said. Bence Rétvári, parliamentary state secretary, told a conference on substance abuse treatment that the government will next year double spending on youth rehabilitation centres.

Apart from the increase in rehabilitation spending, the government will earmark an additional 42 million forints for social care for addicts.

The state secretary said Hungary’s drug strategy, which runs until 2020, focuses not just on addiction treatment but prevention as well.

The government will also devote greater attention to the criminal aspects of drug abuse, Rétvári said, adding that authorities will in the future be quicker in updating the list of illegal drugs. At present, the list contains 49 types of drugs.

Marijuana remains the most used illegal drug in Hungary, the state secretary said, but pointed out that drug use among secondary school students had declined by 30% between 2011 and 2015.

He said substance rehabilitation and prevention cannot be successful without the work teachers, civil groups, churches, health services and families contribute to the country’s drug strategy.
