NBH-Scandal – Jobbik Lambasts Central Bank Governor Over “Financing State”
The opposition Jobbik party has called on György Matolcsy, governor of the National Bank of Hungary, to resign over recent scandals including purchases of state securities by the central bank’s foundations. Jobbik deputy leader Dániel Z Kárpát told a press conference on Monday that through those purchases the central bank has violated a prohibition of financing state operations, and has “channelled” several billions of forints out of the bank.

The politician also referred to the central bank’s programme of purchasing properties and artworks, which he called unacceptable, and added that those “scandals” were but “the tip of an iceberg”.

“As if the National Bank had forgotten what its basic functions are”, Z Kárpát said, and insisted that rather than “throwing money to the wind” through its foundations, the central bank had better reserved those funds to compensate Hungary’s troubled forex debtors.
