Massive Motor Oil Fraud Uncovered
An “invoice factory” in Debrecen has led detectives of the National Tax and Customs Office to an industrial-scale motor oil adulteration operation, suspected of defrauding the government of nearly Ft 1.5 billion worth of VAT. Six suspects have been questioned, of whom five are in custody.

The invoice factory had made out bogus receipts for its steady clients in any sphere of business life for a 6-7% profit.

One of these long-term clients had adulterated the products of global motor oil brands with cheaper motor oil on an industrial scale.

The motor oil frauds sold some products under their real name but saw better profits by selling the oil under the name of leading brands.

The oil was fitted with labels according to the wishes of the clients in a secret warehouse in Pest county before it was sold to transport and rail companies, car services, car dealers and online stores.

The secret warehouse contained 220,000 litres of oil worth about Ft 250 million.

About 100 tax and customs agents raided 41 homes and other sites across Hungary to seize evidence of the fraud.

Cash, boats, cars, real estate and even riding schools were confiscated to a value of Ft 800 million and 13 bank accounts were frozen.
