Hungary Finishes 12th In Olympic Medal Rankings
Hungary was ranked 12th in medal rankings in this year’s Olympic Games in Rio, where Hungarian athletes gathered a total of 15 medals: eight gold, three silver and four bronze.

The impressive showing is likely to bode well for efforts to build support for holding the 2024 games in Budapest.

Swimmer Katinka Hosszú garnered the most medals among the Hungarian athletes, a total of four at the Olympics, three gold and one silver. She swam for gold in the 400 meters medley, breaking a world record as well as in the 100 meters backstroke and 200 meters medley, while winning silver in the 200 meters backstroke. She is now aiming at competing in Tokyo in 2020 and is a strong advocate of helping Hungarian swimming improve in general and to this end has just established her own Hungarian swimming club.

Hungary’s capital, Budapest, is a candidate city for the 2024 Olympic Games, bidding against Rome, Paris and Los Angeles. Hungary received positive feedback in its bid to host the 2024 Olympic Games from the International Olympic Committee’s executive board at a meeting in Lausanne, in June. The IOC said that Budapest is well suited to the Olympics, according to Balázs Fürjes, government commissioner for the bid.
