Introducing Grand Tokaj Winery
Hungary’s historical wine region of Tokaj has been producing wine for centuries, and has developed a reputation as a must-see spot for connoisseurs

When a region has been making critically acclaimed wine for more than a thousand years, it’s safe to assume the winemakers know what they’re doing. The Tokaj area has been producing great wine for generations, passing down its knowledge from father to son, and earning its reputation as a historical wine region.

The region is famous for the Grand Tokaj winery, and its flagship Tokaji Aszú, a classic Hungarian wine listed as a ‘Hungaricum’ in Hungary, and produced only in the best vintages.

Tokaji Aszú, often referred to as ‘liquid gold’, was a favourite among the Hungarian nobility, and was often found in royal and tzarist wine cellars. The wine is also often favoured by aspiring writers and musicians looking for inspiration. Another popular wine is the Essencia, a wine that was actually listed as a medicine generations ago.

Perhaps the reason why the wine is so popular among the artistic community is the winery’s willingness to try new things. In a region that is known for its vast quantities of sweet wines, Grand Tokaj has shown it is willing to experiment, and thanks to its wine pioneers, Tokaj-Hegyalja is developing a reputation as a place for great dry wines.

The wine is made with the Furmint grape variety, creating something complex yet elegant, which could only be
produced from the area’s volcanic soil.

Grand Tokaj combines experience with innovation, which has led to critical acclaim; the wine produced by Chief Oenologist Károly Áts scored 100 points from US Wine & Spirits Magazine, with Károly himself named Winemaker of the Year in 2012 by the Hungarian Wine Academy. But the wineries aren’t the only reason to visit the Tokaj-Hegyalja region.

The environment is so stunning it’s no wonder the wine produced there is so fantastic. The region is only a two-hour drive from Budapest, making it the perfect place to relax – with a glass of wine of course.
