Áder Signs Migrants Detention Bill
The freshly re-elected President János Áder on Wednesday signed into law the bill on restricting the rights of asylum-seekers, a document posted on Parliament’s website reveals.

The bill sparked international outcry and condemnation, in part because it makes detention of asylum-seekers in transit zones automatic before their claim can be heard, and applies to children aged 14 or over, as well as adults.

Rights groups and the New York Times said the legislation marks a new low for Hungary, while Unicef had urged Áder to think about the children before signing the bill into law.

When the law takes effect, migrants caught anywhere within Hungary will be taken back to the transit zones on the Serbian border.
