Unicef Asks Áder Not To Sign Bill
UN children’s organisation Unicef has appealed to President János Áder, exhorting him “to treat all children first and foremost as children,” and asking him to think about that before signing the bill on detaining asylum-seekers in container camps.

Unicef expressed concern over the new Hungarian law whereby all asylum-seekers, including unaccompanied children over 14 years of age, are detained while their applications are assessed.

Regional director Afshan Khan issued a statement declaring that “detaining refugee and migrant children fleeing violence and persecution and seeking a better life is traumatic. It effectively criminalises children and robs them of their rights, such as education. The impact of this on any child, no matter their age, can last a lifetime.”
