Cross-Border Shopping On The Rise
Hungarians on shopping tours to neighbouring countries spent Ft 26 billion in the first quarter, up 18% from Ft 22 billion in the same period of 2016, the Central Statistics Office announced.

The number of shopping tours also rose, from 1.1 million to 1.3 million.

The most frequented destination for shoppers is Austria, where Hungarians spent Ft 10 billion in the first quarter, up from Ft 9 billion one year earlier.

Hungarians spent Ft 3 billion in Slovakia, the same amount as one year earlier, while the total spent on shopping expeditions to Serbia grew from Ft 2 billion to Ft 3.5 billion.

Foreigners on shopping tours to Hungary spent a total of Ft 39 billion here in the first quarter, up 5%, year-on-year, from Ft 37 billion in 2016.
