Balaton Water Level May Be Raised
The water management authority Országos Vízügyi Igazgatóság has signed a contract with consortium Sió Zsilip 2016 on preparation works to increase the level of the water in Lake Balaton to 120cm, Somogy county news website Sonline learnt.

The consortium, comprising Vízterv Consult, SBS-Komir and the Budapest Technical University, will draw up plans and obtain all necessary permits.

Higher water is better for tourism, observed Balatonfenyves mayor Gábor Lombár.

However, the government will have to provide funds for low-lying communities for flood prevention work, he added.

Towns are currently protected to a water level of 100cm, said mayor Miklós Mészáros of Balatonboglár.
