Energy Prices Will Double Budapest Transport Company’s Losses
The BKV’s energy costs doubled in the first half of 2022 compared to the same period of last year, the Budapest public transport company said in response to HVG’s question.

The unit price of electricity increased by 136% percent and that of diesel by 65% in one year, the company added.

The BKV generated losses of Ft 6.6 billion in 2020, Ft 13.3 billion in 2021, and this year’s shortfall is expected to be Ft 26 billion.

The government has given Ft 12 billion to the transport company in recent years, while the city allocated Ft 120 billion.

“From the point of view of financial rationality, it is not yet clear how we will finish the year 2022, but it cannot happen that we eliminate lines, since we are talking about community services that people need,” city officials emphasised to HVG.
