Debrecen Zoo in Eastern Hungary Welcomes Its First Red Panda Cub
Celebrating its 65th anniversary this year, the zoo in Hungary’s second city of Debrecen has just welcomed a new arrival as Maci the red panda recently gave birth to her first healthy offspring.

Now five weeks old, her new-born girl weighs 410 grams, the same as two apples. The public will help choose a name for the youngster.

Debrecen’s red panda enclosure first opened in 2013, with the arrival of the Pici and Maci twins from from the Zoo d’Asson in south-west France. Later began an international breeding programme, as Pici headed for Darjeeling Zoo in India, located in the Southern Himalayas and specialised in reintroducing of native species like red pandas back to the wild.

Maci’s new arrival is the 80th red panda born in Europe over the past year, and after only two years of a breeding pair being housed in Debrecen. The zoo is proud to have contributed to the European insurance population and to the survival of this charming species as a whole.
