Hungary and the US state of Maryland have signed an interstate agreement to ensure the continued operations of McDaniel College in Budapest under Hungary’s amended higher education law, Foreign Minister Péter Szijjártó said on Friday. Hungary amended its higher education law earlier this year to tighten rules governing the operations of foreign universities in the country.
City Council Cuts Budapest Festival Orchestra Funding By HUF 200 M

The Budapest general assembly voted to cut funding for the internationally celebrated Budapest Festival Orchestra from last year’s 260 million forints (EUR 840,000) to 60 million forints. Budapest Deputy Mayor Alexandra Szalay- Bobrovniczky said in the debate on the orchestra’s funding that it receives a significant amount of state support alongside the money it gets from the city.

In future churches should be registered by courts based on legal provisions, according to a consultation paper on the church law published online on kormany.hu. The law in effect since January 1, 2012 originally recognised only 14 congregations as established churches but allowed other faiths to apply to parliament for recognition, dependent on the vote of a two-thirds majority.
Jobbik Wants Work-Free December 24 In Hungary

Jobbik is moving to get Parliament to declare December 24 a holiday, spokesman Ádám Mirkóczki announced on Thursday. He said an amendment to that effect could meet “a decades-long social need” as little serious work is done in the vast majority of workplaces on December 24.
