Almost 230,000 people voted and the oak of Bátaszék won the competition.
The European Tree of the Year contest originated in 2011. It was inspired by the popular Tree of the Year contest, which has been organised in the Czech Republic. The European round is a finale consisting of the winners of the national rounds. This year, Hungary is represented by the oak of Bátaszék.

Trees uprooted by gale-force winds, roads blocked by fallen branches, and disruptions caused by broken power lines have been reported from all over Hungary. A storm alert has been issued for the whole country.

"Due to the flood not merely the people, but even dogs have been left without a lid. The fate of many thousands of animals turned tragic when the water flooded the houses and the shelters admitting abandoned animals. Families that were placed at temporary homes did not have the possibility to take their faithful dogs to their new accomodations.
