English Speaking Wine Events Aplenty In 2017 In Budapest

While wine may ostensibly know no language barriers, many non-Hungarian speaking expats and visitors find themselves excluded from the plethora of tutored tastings that go on almost every day, once people’s palates wake up again after the seasonal excesses. However, the good news is that there are a number of vinous options for those not proficient in the Magyar tongue.

When you have FRÖCCS (Wine Spritzer) next time, make sure it’s made with SZÓDAVÍZ (carbonated water) and not plastic bottled SZÉNSAVAS ÁSVÁNYVÍZ (carbonated mineral water). While SZÓDAVÍZ, chilled and fresh, brings out the best in wine and makes it a light summer drink, the minerals in the latter spoil the inherent properties of wine.

Paprika and goulash immediately come to mind as typical Hungarian cuisine, as deeply rooted as spaghetti in Italy. One thing is for sure: Hungarians like to eat meat. Tucked away down a side street off the tourist-popular Ráday Street, Green Sheep Bar is a cozy little basement bar and a great place to stop for a few after dinner. Founded by a local entrepreneur with a long history at other breweries, it only opened in late 2015 and is still finding its feet in the Budapest craft beer scene.
